USEFUL INFORMATION ABOUT OUR TOILET

1st Our toilet is completely organic in that it has no smelly or hazardous chemicals. The only thing you have to add to our toilet is peat moss. The peat moss actually works to break down the solid wastes and turn them into fertilizer or compost.

2nd Because our toilet separates the liquids from the solids (to put it politely), it doesn’t smell bad. It’s when you mix the urine and the solids that you get the really bad odors associated with sewage. When working properly the toilet will have a slight earthy smell when you open it.

3rd Because the liquids are not mixed with the solid wastes you get an exceptional amount of uses before you need to empty the unit. For example; a couple using their boat or cabin on the weekends may go an entire summer without having to empty the solid’s tank. The front liquid tank is approximately 2.2 gallons and will need to be emptied more frequently. We empty ours into the marina toilet.

4th Our toilet is called a dry toilet because it uses no water for flushing. That’s right; there is no plumbing to attach to our toilet. This is yet another reason for the exceptional capacity.

5th Un-like any other type of toilet, the longer you let a composting toilet sit, the better it will smell when it’s time to empty it. No more having to deal with pump-outs or smelly portable-potties at the end of your long weekend. The longer a composting toilet sits the more time it has to do its job.

6th Out toilet is very economical to operate; there are NO chemicals to buy. We purchased a bale of peat moss from “Lowe’s” more than two years ago for $10.00 and we’re still using it.

7th Easy to install; the unit attaches to the floor with two small l brackets. There is one ventilation hose to run outside and one 12volt power hook-up for a small computer type fan. The unit could even be run completely powerless by running the vent hose to a solar vent. (Please see or installation instructions for additional information)

8th Easy to empty; when it’s time to empty your toilet simply flip the two latches on the sides and lift the upper section up a few inches. Put the lid on the liquid bottle and lift it out of its holder. To empty the main tank un-hook the 12 volt power connector and the vent hose and then slide the upper section off its open ended hinge. Undo the 2 thumb screws on the base and it’s ready to empty. Because there are no liquids in the main tank, even full it is never heavy. The unit is sized so that a kitchen garbage bag will go over the end of the main tank. Simply flip it over and you’re done. There is no need to clean the tank when you empty it, any left-over matter will help start the composting process all over again.

Frequently asked questions

1 Does it smell bad? No, because you never mix the liquid wastes with the solid wastes it does not have the odors associated with sewage or holding tank systems. When working properly it will have a slight earthy smell.

2 When should I empty it? It is best to allow the solids to decompose before emptying your toilet. The longer you wait before emptying your toilet, the nicer the job will be. Many boaters will leave the solid wastes in the toilet over the winter and empty it in the spring. That may not be possible for some applications, but you will find that even in as little as one week much of the solid wastes have begun to decompose, and just the paper products are visible. It is best if you do not leave the liquid wastes in the tank for extended periods. While everyone is different, some urine will smell bad if allowed to sit for extended periods.

3 Where do I empty it? The proper place to empty the solids tank is in a composting bin where it can be used to fertilize ornamental plants. Boaters may empty theirs overboard if they are the proper distance offshore. Many campgrounds now have composting bins as composting is becoming more popular. The liquid tank can be emptied into a toilet or overboard if offshore.

4 How does it separate the liquids and the solids? The toilet has a gate or door that when closed directs the liquid waste into the front tank. When the door is open the solids pass through to the lower main tank. When seated on the toilet (male or female) the liquids naturally are aimed towards the front collection area and the solids are directed straight down into the main tank.

5 Why is the toilet seat molded into the unit? Because we designed this toilet for the “mobile” market, this became a safety issue. I have spoken with boaters who have had a toilet seat break off in rough conditions. I have heard of other boaters lifting the seat and sitting on the base of the toilet to avoid this problem. (That can’t be comfortable). While this isn’t as likely with an RV, it would not be out of the question.

6 Can I use it standing up? Yes, although the recommended use is sitting down. Especially when underway in a moving vehicle.

7 Do I need to run the fan all of the time? While the unit can be operated without the fan it is best if it runs all of the time. This will prevent any musty odors and the fan helps with the composting process. If battery drain is a concern then you might consider attaching the unit to a solar vent instead of using the built in fan, or using a small solar panel to offset the battery drain.
